Number of adults under each of the four US correctional statuses: probation (sentence served in the community), parole (after a prison term), state or federal prison, and local jail (pre-trial detention and short sentences). Bureau of Justice Statistics, at December 31 (jails: end of June). One person can hold two statuses: the lines do not add up.· Adults under each correctional status in the United States, Bureau of Justice Statistics « Correctional Populations ». Probation = sentence served in the community instead of jail or prison; parole = supervised release after a prison term; prison = state or federal prisons (sentences over a year); local jail = county / city jails (people awaiting trial and short sentences). Probation, parole and prison at December 31, jails on the last weekday of June; rounded to the nearest 100. A person can hold two statuses (a probationer held in jail…), so the lines are shown side by side and never added up. Probation counts for 2022-2023 are not comparable with earlier years: coverage was expanded in 2023. 2020: releases and fewer admissions during the pandemic.
